Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to question specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
